Engelberg

Perfect weekend kickoff prior to hanging out at Mauerpark.

Website

Engelberg is a classic German breakfast and lunch spot on Oderberger Straße in Prenzlauer Berg, which is one of the most beautiful streets in Berlin. Sourcing some of the finest charcuterie and cheese from all over Germany, Engelberg is one of the prime restaurants in the neighbourhood and, quite frankly, also one of the best spots in Berlin for a proper, German breakfast.

Engelberg's location is vey lovely and it's the perfect spot for a breakfast, coffee or lunch when you're in Prenzlauer Berg. Engelberg is located on one of Berlin's most beautiful streets, Oderberger Straße in central Prenzlauer Berg, a massively wide street laced with stunning buildings and tons of restaurants. It's also home to some of the most spectacular summer sunsets. One thing Oderberger is not really known for is quality restaurants, save for a few exceptions. Engelberg is one of them. The German eatery serves breakfast and lunch and is one of the most popular spots on the whole street. It's a classic summer location as the size of the restaurant triples during the hot months with the use of the wide sidewalk.

The menu is small and pretty much everything on it is great

Engelberg serves a mean, German breakfast and unlike many other German breakfast joints, Engelberg puts a lot of effort in sourcing quality produce. Breakfast at Engelberg starts with the choice if you want to go for the traditional, German breakfast consisting out of a bread basket with your choice of sides. Alternatively you can go for one of the hot dishes, which include Bavarian weißwürste, scrambled eggs and Strammer Max, a German classic where a fried egg and ham are laced onto a slice of sourdough bread. But no worries, the greatest thing about Engelberg is that you can't really go wrong at this place, the menu is small and pretty much everything on it is great.

Engelberg is one of the best places in Berlin for a German breakfast

Greatness always originates from simplicity, and this is very much the case at Engelberg. If you go for the bread basket, you'll have the choice between a large variation of spectacular charcuterie and cheeses, all of ridiculous quality, sliced thinly to order. This is for me how German breakfast should be, you should know that it's surprisingly hard to get a hold of premium ham and salamis from small scale producers. Engelberg sources the good stuff and that's one of the reasons I love this place. One of my favourite dishes is the Strammer Max, a plate where I just love mixing the sensational German ham with the runny yolk from the fried egg only to soak it up with a slice of German sourdough bread. The scrambled eggs 'Engelberg" with cured ham and goat cheese is also a killer choice. And of that's not enough, Engelberg is also one of my favourite places to enjoy a traditional Bavarian Weißwurst breakfast along with a delicious Unertl Weißbier.

Engelberg is one of the best places in Berlin for a German breakfast and a place that should be on your bucket list. It's great example of what you can achieve if you put in some effort into procuring great produce and these guys are heroes for showcasing the skills of small scale producers. In a time where Berlin is becoming less and less German, I'm thrilled to have places like Engelberg around and this eatery should be on your bucket list.
