Berlin’s culinary prestige just took a significant blow in the latest release of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2025 extended list. While the top 50 list only will be published on June 19th, we can already say that no Berlin restaurant will be on that list. For the first time in recent years, the German capital finds itself without a single restaurant in the coveted top 50 rankings.
Previously, Berlin’s fine dining trailblazers were on a culinary roll, with establishments like Restaurant Tim Raue and Nobelhart & Schmutzig securing spots at No. 30 and No. 43, respectively, in the 2024 list. However, the 2025 rankings reveal a drop: Tim Raue has slipped to No. 58, while Nobelhart & Schmutzig now sits at No. 59. Coda, another Berlin favorite, has also experienced a drop, moving from No. 62 to No. 79. Adding to the city’s culinary woes, the acclaimed restaurant Ernst, which previously held the No. 75 position, closed its doors last year and is no longer represented on the list.
This downturn highlights a broader shift in the global gastronomic landscape. Regions like the Middle East, Latin America and Asia have made significant strides, bolstered by increased tourism and substantial investments in their culinary sectors. In contrast, Berlin’s fine dining establishments face challenges, including less culinary tourism, explosive costs and a local dining culture that increasingly favors casual over upscale experiences.
Amidst this backdrop, Germany’s hopes for representation in the top 50 now rest on Restaurant Jan in Munich. Helmed by chef Jan Hartwig, the establishment has garnered attention for its exceptional cuisine and is seen as the country’s best chance to reclaim a spot in the upper echelons of global dining.
The full list of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2025 will be unveiled in Turin on June 19, and food enthusiasts worldwide will be watching closely to see how the rankings unfold.
